The Lady Who Wouldn’t Give Up!
  • Understanding the “Dogs” Analogy: This is the trickiest part for children. Explain that Jesus used a gentle word for a “little pet dog” (kunarion), not a mean wild dog. He wasn’t calling her a bad name. He was using a common way of talking about how God’s special family (the Jewish people, the “children”) received His blessings first. The woman’s clever response acknowledges this order but highlights God’s abundant grace, where even the “crumbs” (small blessings) are powerful. Emphasize Jesus’ purpose in the exchange: to show His disciples and us the woman’s amazing faith and to expand their understanding of God’s love for everyone.
  • The “Canaanite” Identity: For younger children, you can simply say “a lady from a different town” or “a lady who wasn’t Jewish.” For older children (8-10), you can briefly explain that the Canaanites were an ancient people group that Jewish people often had conflict with, making Jesus helping her even more special and surprising.
  • Purpose of Jesus’ Initial Silence/Words: These were primarily for the disciples’ benefit, to teach them about prejudice and God’s wider plan. It was a test for the woman, but more profoundly, a teaching moment for those observing.
